LONDON: Liverpool’s clash with Leeds and Watford’s visit to Wolves, scheduled for Sunday, are among the latest Premier League matches forced to be postponed due to COVID-19.

A total of 12 matches have been postponed over the past two weeks as Britain struggled with a surge of positive cases due to the spread of the Omicron variant.

Everton’s request to postpone the match against Burnley was however rejected despite 11 of its players injured or positive COVID-19.

Earlier this week English Premier League clubs rejected the option of temporarily suspending the season to break the chain of infection.

However the original Boxing Day schedule has been disrupted with more positive cases expected to be reported as clubs start testing every day.

“Following postponement applications from Leeds United and Watford due to COVID-19, the Premier League board of directors met today and agreed to postpone the Boxing Day matches of the two clubs,” the Premier League said.

Leeds reported five positive cases among its players and staff yesterday, and added to their injury list were unable to list 13 outfielders and one goalkeeper from their 25 -man squad.

Watford’s two previous games against Burnley and Crystal Palace also had to be postponed.
