Lionel Messi has scored 25 goals in LaLiga this season as Barcelona beat Getafe earlier this morning, matching the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Barcelona captain scored twice as his side clinched the 5-2 win, meaning he and Ronaldo became the only two players in Europe’s top five leagues to score at least 25 goals in 12 different seasons over the century.

The 33 -year -old scored a double before the break and helped Ronald Araujo head in Barca’s fourth goal as well as playing a role in securing a penalty from Antoine Griezmann late in the game.

Unlike Ronaldo, Messi created a record 25 goals in a row starting in the 2009-10 season.

While Ronaldo earned those seasons while representing Manchester United, Real Madrid and his newest club, Juventus, where he scored 25 goals in Serie A this season, Messi did so with just Barcelona.

His two goals earlier this morning also ended Messi’s poor record in the league match against Getafe at home. He had never before scored against the opponent in his last three meetings at Camp Nou, his longest goalless record at home in the tournament.
