LONDON: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said the victory felt better in the presence of spectators after beating Tottenham 1-0 at Wembley to win the League Cup for the fourth time in a row in front of 8,000 fans earlier this morning.
Aymeric Laporte’s header eight minutes from time finally gave City victory as they extended Spurs’ 13 -year wait for the trophy.
For the first time in 13 months, football in England provided an opportunity for supporters of both teams to be in the stadium in one of the test sessions at the 90,000-seat stadium at Wembley.
“It’s not full, but it’s much better,” Guardiola said. “To celebrate it with them it’s better.
“We played very well. We were very happy to win the first title, four times in a row in this tournament, more special because in the last 33 games, we won 30.”
Defeat to Chelsea in the semi -finals of the FA Cup last week means City cannot win four titles this season.
However, they remain on track for three titles with the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain set for early Thursday morning before awaiting next weekend’s Premier League title.
The win gave Guardiola a personal title of 25 trophies in his career with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City with seven of them in England.
“I’m in big clubs: Barcelona, Bayern Munich and here, because of that it’s easy to do,” the Catalan operator said.
Instead, Tottenham’s long wait continues.
