MILAN: France won the UEFA Nations League after coming from behind by beating Spain 2-1 in the final here, just now.
Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe scored for the World Cup winners after Spain took the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal’s goal midway through the match.
Didier Deschamps praised Karim Benzema after the previously sidelined striker played a key role in creating success for France in the UEFA Nations League.
Benzema blasted home France’s equalizer in a 2-1 win over Spain that gave the world champions the trophy and Deschamps was clearly delighted with the striker.
“Karim is an important player and he proved in two games that he has great talent, it’s there to be seen,” he said.
“He’s improved in a lot of things. He’s clinical. He plays a role when opening up opportunities.”
The Real Madrid striker was sidelined from the national team for almost five years but was recalled by Deschamps ahead of Euro 2020.
He put in a good performance in the last four rounds of the UEFA Nations League when he blasted home a goal as France trailed before a 3-2 win over Belgium and equalized after Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead in the final.
“From a personal point of view, he is no longer the same player, he is mature. He has been at the highest level for a long time and I am glad he can now celebrate it with France tonight.”
