BUDAPEST: Karim Benzema admitted he was happy to score his first goal for France since 2015 against Portugal, given there was ‘a bit of pressure’ on him for the team.
The Real Madrid striker was called back by coach Didier Deschamps for the 2020 European Championship after being sidelined for nearly six years from international action following allegations of plotting intimidation.
Benzema failed to score any goals in four games after being recalled by France who managed to win the World Cup despite without his previous services.
However, he completed a penalty kick in the final action of Group F, before adding another goal to end his wait.
“It’s a tremendous excitement and also a sense of pride,” he told BeIN Sports.
“I think everyone is waiting for it. There’s a little bit of pressure from all over the country, but I’m a professional footballer and need that kind of pressure.”
The 2-2 result drawn by Les Bleus, puts them as group champions and will meet Switzerland in the round of 16, next week.
“He (Benzema) is really looking forward to the goal. He hasn’t lost confidence, neither have I,” Deschamps told TF1.
“We will rest for a while and then get ready to meet Switzerland as best we can.”
