LONDON: Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick as Tottenham thrashed Sheffield United 4-0 earlier this morning.
Tottenham took advantage of the postponement of Liverpool’s match against Manchester United to move up to fifth in the league as a result of Bale’s first hat -trick in the Premier League.
The Welshman was sidelined under Jose Mourinho during his loan spell from Real Madrid, but has now scored four goals in three games since Ryan Mason replaced the Portuguese coach.
Bale scored from close range to break the deadlock nine minutes before the end of the first half.
A quick counter-attack from a Sheffield United corner then allowed Son Heung-min to bait for Bale to blast into the corner of the net.
Bale’s shot into the corner of the net completed the player’s hat -trick before Son added a fourth.
Tottenham are now just five points behind fourth -placed Chelsea with four games remaining.
Earlier, Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-0 to end four games without a win as a result of Mohamed Elneny’s first goal in the Premier League and a great shot by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The bottom four, Newcastle remain nine points off the relegation zone with four games remaining.
The win puts Arsenal in ninth place but their season now depends on whether they can turn a 2-1 defeat in the Europa League semi-finals to Villarreal early on Friday morning.
